Cameron Ward was born on May 25, 2002, in West Columbia, Texas. He went to Columbia High School, where he played football. As a junior, he completed 72 out of 124 passes, throwing for 1,070 yards and scoring seven touchdowns.
In his senior year, Ward played in a Wing T offense, which focused on running, so he averaged only 12 pass attempts per game. Despite his talent, Ward received only one scholarship offer, which came from the University of the Incarnate Word. He accepted the offer and continued his football journey at the college level.

Cameron Ward started his college football career at Incarnate Word. As a freshman in the 2020–2021 season, he became the starting quarterback. In just six games, he threw for 2,260 yards and 24 touchdowns, earning the Jerry Rice Award for the best freshman in the FCS.
In his sophomore year, Ward threw for 4,648 yards and 47 touchdowns and was named Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year. He then transferred to Washington State in 2022, where he played two seasons. In 2024, Ward decided to transfer to Miami instead of entering the NFL Draft to improve his draft chances.
