While studying at Syracuse University, Hanson worked as a summer intern at WXYZ-TV in Michigan. In 1993, he got his first job as an anchor and reporter at WPBN-TV in Traverse City, Michigan. He later worked at different TV stations, including WICS-TV in Springfield, Illinois, and WFTS-TV in Tampa, Florida.
In 2006, Hanson joined the NFL Network. As of December 15, 2023, he is the host of NFL RedZone, where he covers NFL games live for seven hours on Sundays. He also hosts other shows during the week and has been a host for many Super Bowls. In 2024, he will host a special show for the Summer Olympics.
