She is best known for playing Tracy Turnblad in the 1988 movie Hairspray, which earned her a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead. Lake also hosted her own talk show, Ricki Lake, from September 1993 to May 2004, making her the youngest person to host a syndicated talk show at that time.
In late 2012, she started a second talk show called The Ricki Lake Show, which was canceled in 2013 after one season. However, she won her first Daytime Emmy Award for this show.
