Stephen Colbert will be airing this week, he missed his show on 16 September probably due to his participation in the Emmy Awards. He and his team took the night off to take a rest so there was a rerun of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday, September 16. This is the first time since the new season started that he's taking a night off.

Additionally, Colbert's new cookbook is releasing on Tuesday, September 17, which could be keeping him busy. The good news is that The Late Show will return with new episodes from Tuesday, September 17, through Thursday, September 19.

Who is Stephen Colbert?

Stephen Colbert is an American comedian, writer, producer, actor, and TV host. He is best known for hosting The Colbert Report on Comedy Central from 2005 to 2014 and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS since 2015. Before becoming famous, Colbert studied acting and got into improvisational theater at Northwestern University.

He started his career at Second City Chicago, where he worked with other comedians like Steve Carell. He also worked on The Dana Carvey Show and the sitcom Strangers with Candy. Colbert gained wider recognition as a correspondent on The Daily Show. He then created The Colbert Report, a show that parodied political talk shows. He performed at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner 2006, where he performed in character, which brought him even more attention.

Colbert has won numerous awards, including nine Primetime Emmy Awards, two Grammy Awards, and three Peabody Awards. He was also named one of Time's 100 Most Influential People. His book I Am America (And So Can You!) topped The New York Times Best Seller list in 2007.

Stephen Colbert Career

While studying at Northwestern University, Stephen Colbert was focused on becoming a dramatic actor and didn't initially like comedy. He started doing improv at college and joined the Annoyance Theatre in Chicago.

After graduating in 1986, he needed a job and took a position at Second City, where he discovered a love for comedy and began taking improv classes.  He was hired by Second City's touring company and eventually worked with Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello. This led to his involvement in the sketch comedy show Exit 57 on Comedy Central, which aired from 1995 to 1996.

After Exit 57 ended, Stephen Colbert worked on The Dana Carvey Show for six months, where he teamed up with Steve Carell and other comedians. The show was canceled after just seven episodes. Colbert then worked as a freelance writer for Saturday Night Live, where he voiced a character on the animated sketch The Ambiguously Gay Duo. He also filmed segments for Good Morning America. In 1999, Colbert started working on Strangers with Candy, a comedy show he co-wrote and starred in.

Stephen Colbert hosted The Colbert Report from October 2005 to December 2014. The show was a spin-off of The Daily Show and parodied political talk shows with Colbert playing a loud, right-wing character. The show was very popular and averaged 1.2 million viewers per night. In 2014, Colbert ended the show with a star-studded final episode. He then took over as host of The Late Show on September 8, 2015, bringing a more political focus to the late-night format.

Stephen Colbert was born in Washington, D.C., and is the youngest of eleven children in a Catholic family. His siblings are James III, Edward, Mary, William, Margo, Thomas, Jay, Elizabeth, Paul, and Peter. His father, James William Colbert Jr., was an immunologist and served as a medical school dean, while his mother, Lorna Elizabeth Colbert, was a homemaker.

Tragically, Stephen's father and two of his brothers died in a plane crash when he was ten years old. This event had a profound impact on him. After the crash, his mother moved the family to Charleston, South Carolina, where she ran a bed and breakfast.

Stephen has Irish ancestry with some German and English roots. Although his surname was originally pronounced “KOHL-bərt,” he started using the pronunciation “kohl-BAIR” later in life.
